Give Gluten Gut The Boot
All hail the pill that may prevent 'those' side effects.
If you are one of the unfortunate 10 per cent who suffer with gluten sensitivity - there's a new pill that could get rid of the gas and cramps and general pain-in-your-backside effects!
Thanks to some clever science cats in Melbourne, people sensitive to gluten now have access to a pre-meal pill to protect against uncomfortable side effects.
The tablet, containing an enzyme from the papaya fruit, is also showing promising signs for those with coeliac disease.
Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Head of Colorectal Medicine and Genetics, Professor Finlay Macrae said the trial showed the tablet could protect against damage to the gut lining in coeliac patients who digested gluten, and it could improve chronic skin conditions which are a common side effect of the inflammatory disease.
Aussie company Glutagen is marketing the pill saying it could cut the effects of tucking into gluten and wheat-based foods, like gastrointestinal upset, fatigue and tiredness.
The company says they have spent several decades getting it right and it could be life changing for many.
“Gluten sensitivity is not a fad … it isn’t just a lifestyle choice,” Glutagen executive director Dr Ted Stelmasiak said.
